About Us

A company’s character is revealed in what it does. Improving the quality of life wherever we do business is part of our heritage and culture and is an indispensable part of achieving our vision — to be the construction group of choice. As building construction manager and general contractor, Wharton-Smith specializes in water treatment, municipal, education, entertainment, and hospitality projects — all the things a community needs to thrive.

Founded in 1984 by Bill Wharton and George Smith, today, our employees are proud to be a part of a company that makes a positive difference in the lives of our clients, our employees and those in the communities where we live and work.

At the heart of our success throughout the years has been our ability to identify and respond to industry opportunities and challenges ahead of the competition. We have ambitious plans. We’ve been laying a dynamic growth path for our company. We want, and expect, to play a larger role in the $3.6 billion building construction industry. We see an opportunity not just to lead in our markets, but to reimagine and transform them.

Our Vision...

to be the construction group of choice for our employees, our clients, and the communities we serve.

Our Mission...

to exceed our clients' expectations by performing with the highest quality, professionalism, and fairness, and by communicating with honesty and integrity at all times.

Testimonials

Environmental coordination on this project was extremely important. Wharton-Smith managed issues associated with water quality, cultural resources, soil contamination, wetlands, and flood plains. They worked closely with the site contractor and representatives from local government, the Water Management District, Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to ensure that environmental impacts were minimized. Alice Rankeillor, P.E., Project Manager, Gainesville Regional Utilities
Wharton-Smith has been a valued partner of the Central Florida Zoo for more than 20 years. I cannot possibly say enough about the trust, ethics and reliability of Wharton-Smith. Most importantly, Wharton-Smith understands the unique challenges of building and operating in a zoological park and act like a partner when engaged in a project, not just a contractor. They have “been there” for the Zoo repeatedly over the years and are an absolute pleasure to work with. Joe Montisano, CEO, Central Florida Zoological Park
