Wharton-Smith provided Hard Bid – Lump Sum, General Contracting Services on the new two story, 38,527 SF. Public Safety Complex for the City of Tavares. Designed to replace the undersized, outdated and ill converted Train Supply Station Depot being utilized by the City for years as a temporary Fire Station and the crowded, poorly ventilated accommodations the Police Department had been enduring at City Hall. The new facility now houses a fire station, police station and emergency operations center. The fire station features four drive-through apparatus bays with diesel exhaust system, a day room with a kitchen and dining area, and second floor bunk and shower rooms, slide pole and motorized hoist – hose rack. The police station includes a sally-port, fitness center and locker rooms shared with the fire department, administration offices, breakrooms, patrol room, detective unit, interrogation rooms, criminal investigation lab, indoor shooting range, evidence and records storage. The emergency operations center has a community meeting room and a command center with overnight accommodations. Shared Entrance Lobby with ballistic rated doors and windows, elevator and restrooms. Employee asphalt paved vehicle entry and parking with security fence and motorized operable gate. Guest entry drive and parking with irrigated, lush landscaping and sodding.
The structural systems typically utilized on the project include filled cell concrete masonry units (CMU) block, with cavity wall brick veneer and precast stone at Apparatus Bays, front entrance and stairwells with a painted stucco finish around the balance of the exterior perimeter. The interior walls are a combination of load bearing and non-load bearing CMU, with the use of metal stud framing with gypsum board at offices, conference rooms etc. and abuse board installed throughout the corridors. Building second level is support by wide flange structural steel framing and composite reinforced concrete deck. Roof framing consists of structural steel girders, metal bar joist and metal decking. Roofing system includes Lt. Wt. insulated concrete with TPO roofing membrane sloped to back of house building perimeter and drained by gutter and downspouts to underground storm system.
